Do I Need This Now
I have been wondering why the issue of baldness or hair loss has a considerable impact on my self-esteem. I feel less beautiful or handsome and that affects how I interact with people. It makes me more insecure and inadequate, even if it should not really make any difference. Though I know that medical science has been trying throughout history to address this common problem.
Then I came to realization that hair loss is a big business, especially in the place where I live – Florida. There are drugs, surgical procedures and even cutting-edge biological or biochemical procedures being developed to combat hair loss. Which is great for my cause.
These hair loss businesses referred that the most widely accepted drug for the treatment of baldness is minoxidil. Originally a drug for heart conditions, it was found out that a low concentration of the active ingredient in the drug caused an increase in new hair growth and a reduction in hair loss. This drug is applied directly to the scalp by deep massage, which must be done twice a day. Minoxidil for hair loss is marketed as Rogaine. But not all people respond positively to the drug so other medicines had to be developed.
I also came across with Propecia. Another drug that treats hair loss, but it is effective only for men. Known generically as finasteride, this drug has an effect on testosterone metabolism, which has been found to affect hair growth. Testosterone is metabolized into a by-product called DHT. A man’s hair follicles are sensitive to this. DHT brings about a decrease in hair growth. Hair strands are finer and shorter and stop growing sooner. The overall effect is a thinner scalp of hair. Propecia inhibits DHT and therefore stops it from causing hair loss. However, a side effect of this drug is the loss of libido, which some men cannot accept. Of course, who would have want that?
Should I try these drugs now and suffer the consequences later or be happy and contented with this falling hair condition?
